Sports Day – 30th June 2010

After a dismal start to the day the rain eased off allowing the sunshine through. With all the preparations made the students and staff started to fill the field. With the variety of student (6th form Community Sports Leaders, Bryony our Gold Ambassador, Year 11 BTEC sport students and 6th form students working on the Thailand Community Project) and staff helpers the event got underway.

This year saw high level of competitive spirit from all those involved and 5 School Records were broken, some of whom have stood for over 20 years. New school records are in Year 7 Rounders Ball, Year 7 & 9 Long Jump, Year 8 Shot and the Year 8 relay team shaved off over a second!

It was a closely run event (pardon the pun) however Miss Stribling and Mr Pollard out ran the field, which benefitted their nominated charity ‘Make a Wish’ foundation.

Gifted and Talented PE – Whiteoak Leisure Centre

On Friday 9th July 8 of our Year 7 & 8 students went off on their second G&T day in Swanley. They spent the day working with and competing against G&T students from the other 10 secondary schools in the Dartford School Sports Partnership. Look out for further details of similar opportunities like these in the September term.

Cricket Club

We have been lucky enough to have Alex Farmer from Dartford Cricket club coming in on Thursday lunch times – the students that have come to the club have had a chance to learn to bowl, improve their batting skills and play small sided games. We would like to take the opportunity to thank Alex who has given freely of his time to come in and give the students this opportunity.

Sainsbury’s Vouchers

This year as previous years the wider community of WGSG have been proactive in bringing in their Sainsbury’s Vouchers – we have collected around 17,000 which allows us to buy a variety of new and exciting equipment, look out for those in September.

Emerging Schools Netball Tournament – Wednesday 7th July

On Wednesday 7th July the Year 7 & 8 Netball squads went off to Rainham to take part in a day organised by Kent Netball. The students had an opportunity to have some expert coaching from Surrey’s Super League Players; and staff a netball umpiring clinic before the tournament. Both squads played very well winning all but one of their matches, good effort girls well done!

DSSP Ambassador Programme – Wilmington Success!

Most of you will know that for the last year Bryony has been one of two Gold Ambassadors in the Dartford School Sports Partnership, taking a lead role in some of the events organised over the Primary and Secondary schools in the partnership. Unfortunately, she is moving out of the partnership area leaving a vacancy for another Gold Ambassador to be selected from the 11 secondary schools. The partnership development manager, Frances Dean and Gill Moore interviewed students from across the partnership including Sophie. We are delighted to announce that Sophie has been appointed the new partnership Gold Ambassador. An excellent opportunity for her, the school and the partnership, congratulations!

Big Lottery Activities – Mrs Rouncefield

Over the past three terms some of our Year 9 and 10 students have had the opportunity to take part in some of the more unusual sporting activities we have been able to offer. They have enjoyed a course of Boxercise, which will continue in September; they worked with Taylormaid Dance on a number of cheerleading routines; the professional from the Birchwood Park Golf Club coached them on our courts; and finally a group went Ice Skating at the Gillingham Ice Bowl and were instructed by the Coach at the Bowl before taking part in a free skating session.

The department would like to thank the Dartford School Sport Partnership for providing the funding for this initiative through the Big Lottery.
