Music
Your daughter can have individual or group tuition in most instruments and singing and can enjoy making music with the orchestra, as a member of three choirs (the main school choir, chamber choir and gospel choir) and other musical groups (including a rock band).
The Music Department runs a selection of instrumental and vocal ensembles according to demand. Most of these take place during the lunch break. They are led by staff from the school, peripatetic teachers, and sixth form students. These groups include:
- School Choir
- Chamber Choir
- Gospel Choir
- Orchestra
- Flute Group
- String Quartet
- Rock Band
- Steel Band
Regular concerts include the annual Christmas Carol Service at the historic St Michael and All Angels Church in Wilmington, concerts within school and performances at other public venues.
The Music and English Departments regularly collaborate on large-scale musicals (In 2008 we performed Oliver, in 2009 The Wizard of Oz and next year we will be performing Annie).
Visits to concerts are arranged for all students across all key stages. In October of this year a party of students, with staff, went to Glyndebourne to see a performance of Falstaff.
Instrumental and singing lessons are provided through teachers employed by the school during school time.
Students learn on a wide variety of instruments including:
- Piano
- Flute
- Clarinet
- Saxophone
- Oboe
- Violin
- Viola
- ‘Cello
- Double Bass
- Percussion
- Guitar
Tuition takes place in practice rooms located in the Manor and lessons are either 20 or 30 minutes in duration. Lessons during school hours are provided on a rota basis to ensure the minimum disruption to normal lessons.
Information and application forms are available from the Music Department.
