Music
The aim of the Music Department is to promote creativity and enrich the experience of students through music.
WGSG has a thriving music department where students of all musical abilities are encouraged to join a school choir or instrumental ensemble and rehearse performances for public concerts, school assemblies or simply for their own enjoyment.
All pupils in years seven and eight receive three lessons of music fortnightly. They follow a balanced course based on the National Curriculum Key Stage 3 programme of study:
- Performing: controlling sounds
- Composing: creating and developing musical ideas
- Appraising: responding and reviewing
- Listening, and applying knowledge and understanding
Throughout there is a strong emphasis on practical music making (composing and performing), either individually or in groups.
Instrumental and vocal lessons are given during the school day. Pupils wishing to start lessons may collect an application form from the Head of Music.
For GCSE, students follow the Edexcel GCSE which covers three areas: performing, composing (both assessed during the course) and a written paper based on listening to, and answering questions about recorded musical extracts.
At A level, students follow the Edexcel AS and A2 which consists of six units (three at A/S and three at A2), which cover the disciplines of composing and performing, as well as analytical and aural skills
This year, in partnership with Wilmington Boys’ Grammar School and Wilmington Enterprise College, we formed a steel band and this continues to grow in popularity. We regard music making as very important and valuable and are very keen to encourage every student who is interested to take part. The content and quality of the music produced
in the classroom supports a wide range of musical activities and events.
The Christmas Carol Service and school concerts are important events as are the musical productions. We have a proud tradition of offering all our students the opportunity to be involved in musical productions. In 2008 we performed Oliver, in 2009 The Wizard of Oz and next year we will be performing Annie.
As well as providing for the performance components of the GCSE and AS and A level courses students are given the opportunity to take part in the Gravesham Music Festival, perform at the presentation afternoon and evening and have the opportunity to take part in County enrichment courses.
