Media Studies
This subject is available for our A-level students
Media Studies offers an oversight into subjects such as representation in the media, institutions and audiences, and opportunities for students to produce examples of their own media using publishing and editing packages.
The course is split neatly into two parts: coursework and exam and both parts make up 50% of the student’s overall grade.
In Year 12, students research the magazine industry designing and creating their own school and music magazine using packages such as Paint Shop Pro. The course looks at representation in TV Drama and students are expected to analyse a clip focusing on 4 key areas: camera, sound, editing and mise-en-scéne. We also look at media institutions and audiences and students demonstrate their knowledge in the AS examination.
In Year 13 students progress to editing moving images and the briefs vary from a music video to a clip from a new soap opera. In the exam they evaluate their coursework and tackle topics such as 'Media and Collective Identity' and 'We Media'.
