MFL

The Modern Languages department is a thriving and successful department, offering French, German and Italian. All pupils study two languages at KS3 and continue to study at least one language to GCSE level. However, many girls choose to continue with both languages. All three languages are popular choices at AS and A2 level. We also plan to offer the new Diploma in Languages and International Communication, alongside our usual GCSE courses.

Modern Foreign Languages is a well resourced department and students are encouraged to learn through new technologies. We have a dedicated ICT suite and are planning a new language laboratory.

Students in KS4 and 5 have regular contact with the foreign language assistants.
Pupils engage in a variety of activities in lessons in order to practise the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

They are given further opportunities to enhance their learning and gain an insight into the culture of the country through subscription to language magazines, a pen friend scheme and regular trips abroad. These include day trips to St Omer and Lille, study tours to the Loire Valley, Florence and the Black Forest and sixth form trips to Paris, Salzburg and Berlin. Sixth Form students are also encouraged to take part in work experience abroad.

Our aim is to produce pupils who feel confident conversing in a foreign language and have a greater understanding of cultural diversity and, above all, to promote an enduring enthusiasm for the subject.
