Learning to Learn

Learning to Learn is “a process of discovery about learning. It involves a set of principles and skills which, if understood and used, help learners learn more effectively and so become learners for life. At its heart is the belief that learning is learnable.” (Definition from the Campaign for Learning Website)

Wilmington Grammar School for Girls students follow a programme of Learning to Learn lessons in Year 7 in order to help them explore and think about their own learning. In these weekly lessons students learn skills and techniques that can help them to learn more effectively. They learn a vocabulary for learning that they can use and transfer across the school; and they gain an understanding of how they can become reflective, resilient, resourceful, responsible and reasoning learners (the 5 R’s of learning)

Learning to Learn is not a subject in itself, and should not be seen as such, but is a way of supporting our students to become life-long learners.

In Year 9 students who are studying one language also have the opportunity to think further about their learning through a weekly Learning to Learn lesson that supports the independent work they are doing in integrated learning time, and across the rest of the curriculum.
